Designed to both lower and lift loaded pallets from storage spaces that are high is a narrow aisle forklift. This particular type is suitable for work places with narrow spaces between aisles, like for example warehouses or retail environments. The forklift has small, solid rubber tires which make maneuvering easy.

The operator of this particular type of forklift normally stands up inside a small cockpit. The stand-up design enables the narrow aisle forklift to be as short and narrow as possible. A stand-up cockpit forklift usually has three tires: two in the front, and one in the rear. This configuration allows for fast and easy maneuvering. There are several versions of these forklifts which are available with a sit-down cockpit. The lift attachment is capable of pivoting to the sides, allowing the lift to be operated without the operator having to move the entire machine. The sit-down version generally has four wheels.

An electric engine is used to power numerous narrow aisle forklifts. Machines which are electrically powered do not make exhaust fumes and are not noisy, making them the preferred choice for closed places like retail spaces. Several lifts come with a gas engine or a diesel engine. However, the diesel model is not suggested to be used indoors because it can be noisy and produce exhaust.
