Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is supplied by huge industrial batteries which have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety procedures must always be followed when someone connects the battery to the charger. It is essential to inspect battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for workers working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The best way to protect skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to wear an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post should be situated close to the charging area. The route to the station should not be obstructed and a worker who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area within 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit objects like matches or lighters to be utilized when someone is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
