Job Description
A forklift driver has the important task of safely transporting items from one place to another in a safe manner. They utilize the forklifts controls and toggles in order to execute accurate movements and lift and transport cargo efficiently. Lift truck operators often unload trailers, trains, shipping containers or other types of storage units. The forklift operator has the added job of carrying out regular inspections on the machinery in order to ensure it is capable and safe to perform the necessary job.
Personal Qualities
Lift truck operators should have basic reading and writing skills. The forklift operator must be healthy physically and can carry 30 pounds. They should be physically able to utilize a forklift; hence, they require the physical ability of using both feet, both arms and both hands. The driver of the forklift should ideally be able to stand for an 8 hour shift. In nearly all work settings, they would be entitled to a half-hour lunch break and two short coffee breaks during the day. It is very important that the operator of the forklift not be prone to reckless driving or rage of any kind.
Training
Forklift training is often completed on the job. Training would normally cover control and safety training, that can be completed in various ways. These may include videos, lectures and testing. A performance test would also be done on the forklift. When the tests have been successfully completed, a license can be issued. This license needs to be renewed according to shop procedures and according to provincial and state laws. If you get the chance to complete your forklift training on the job, it is a great idea and it is another skill you could add to your resume.
Job Locations
In larger establishments such as manufacturing or retail facilities, lift truck drivers may work in a warehouse department. Lift truck drivers can also work in other fields, depending on the businesses requirements. Forklifts are extremely useful pieces of equipment which can be found on logging sites and construction sites along with in nearly all shipping and receiving facilities, ports and train yards.
